A former Robert Gordon University student has been put forward for a national accolade thanks to his work designing outfits based on robots.

Ryan Cowie, 21, has been shortlisted as graduate of the year in this year’s Scottish Fashion Awards, which showcase some of the best up-and-coming talent in the clothing industry.

The former St Machar Academy pupil, who attended his Gray’s School of Art graduation ceremony last month, said he was stunned to learn about his nomination.

Mr Cowie said: “It was amazing when I found out they had actually picked me.

“I didn’t graduate with a high a degree as I would have liked and I was telling everyone I was a ‘fashion loser’, and then this ended up happening.”

The designer was chosen due to his unique degree show collection, titled Fembots, which combined feminine beauty and science fiction motifs.

He continued: “It was inspired by how female robots have been explored in culture – how female sexuality and a lack of emotion is such a deadly combination, especially for the men that created or used them.

“If you imagine that Joan Crawford starred in Barbarella that would totally be my style.”

This year’s awards, now in its tenth year, will be judged by Caroline Rush of the British Fashion Council, supermodel Stella Tennant, and the editors of glossy magazines such as Glamour, Grazia and Marie-Claire.

Mr Cowie is up against four other recent graduates, and will find out the results on September 3.
