This is how the new Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre could look if plans are approved by councillors.

The designs for a 10,000-seater arena and club lounge have been produced as councillors prepare to discuss the outcome of a consultation.

Members of the public have been asked to comment on two masterplans – one for a new £333million AECC at Bucksburn and a second for the site of the existing centre at Bridge of Don, where 518 new homes could be built.

Aberdeen City Council’s communities, housing and infrastructure committee will meet to consider the results on Thursday, August 27.

The findings will be incorporated into reports on the planning applications for the two sites.

It is hoped that the council’s planning development management committee will be in a position to make a decision on planning permission in principle by the end of the year.

The firm behind the new centre – which would be built on the former site of the Rowett Research Institute – said it would make a significant contribution to the Scottish economy.

Henry Boot Developments’ Scottish director, Nick Harris, said: “It will allow Aberdeen to compete on an international scale and attract major artists to the city.

“It will elevate Aberdeen into the top five of global competitor energy cities for conferences and exhibitions and it will improve the range of cultural and entertainment events that can take place in Aberdeen, thereby strengthening the business and leisure appeal of the city.

“The plans for the new AECC and surrounding site are hugely exciting and I am delighted that our proposals to deliver this new facility are moving forward.”

Bucksburn and Newhills and Dyce and Stoneywood community councils have both objected to the new AECC, raising concerns over the demolition of Strathcona House, part of the Rowett complex.

Supporters include Aberdeen International Airport and the Energetica partnership.

Transport Scotland has yet to decide on its response and is seeking more information on the potential impact on traffic on the A96 corridor in the Dyce area.
