Tributes have been paid to a man who died after being struck by a car on a the A90.

Father-of-two Barry McRae, 34, died after being hit on the northbound carriageway of the Aberdeen to Dundee road at around 2.30am on Friday.

It is thought he was travelling in a car parked on the other side of the embankment, on the southbound side of the A90, near Stracathro.

But he left the vehicle and crossed the dual carriageway before being hit by a car travelling behind a Press and Journal delivery lorry.

It is understood Mr McRae, who was naked at the time of the accident, was crouched on the central reservation just before the incident took place.

The Press and Journal delivery driver had slowed down after seeing him and was then forced to swerve when he went onto the road.

The vehicle travelling behind is understood to have collided with Mr McRae.

Yesterday, his wife Amanda, 31, was said by family members to be too upset to talk about the tragedy.

The couple, who were married abroad in January 2011, have two daughters aged seven and three.

Mr McRae’s mother Alison, from Stonehaven, also declined to comment.

But tributes poured onto social media websites over the weekend.

One message to Mr McRae’s wife said: “There’s nothing that can take away all the pain you and the girls will have in your hearts, but please know that you are in our thoughts.

“I’m so saddened to hear about Barry.”

Another said: “I don’t know what to say – I’m so shocked. Thinking of you all so much.”

Another simply said: “My heart goes out to you all.”

Yesterday police were still trying to piece together events leading up to the tragic accident.

The A90 was closed for more than 12 hours after the crash as investigators carried out a detailed examination of the scene, with a 51-mile diversion in place via Brechin and Edzell.

A blue forensics tent was erected across the central reservation close to the Press and Journal lorry and an Audi with a damaged windscreen was parked further along the carriageway.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward by calling 101.
