Probe after three cars are set on fire in Fraserburgh

Police are searching for those behind a fire at a Fraserburgh scrapyard in an early morning attack.

The fires were set around 4am yesterday morning at Seaview Car Dismantlers on Braes Road.

Police are now carrying out a join investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service into its cause.

Two appliances attended and crews took more than an hour to make the scene at the scrapyard safe.

Last night, a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We are now working with Police Scotland to identify how this has happened.”

And a spokeswoman for the police added: “A joint investigation will be carried out.

“At the moment we are treating this incident as suspicious.”

It is the second fire to hit the scrap merchant’s in as many years and has left owner William Stewart out of pocket.

Last night, Mr Stewart said: “A caravan further up the street went on fire at about 12am, and at 2.30am I was woken by the police to say that someone had set fire to some of our cars outside.

“There are some youths seen on the CCTV coming towards it and running away – the police are still investigating it.”

In 2013, police carried out forensic searched of Mr Stewart’s yard and neighbouring properties after a nearby yard used to store fishing nets was attacked by several young men.

Rows of scrap vehicles were destroyed in the fire – along with a boat – and lost the business about £28,000.

Yesterday, he said the damage caused this time around was less significant.

“I don’t think we’ve been targeted – it’s just random, and the chances are they’ll go do it somewhere else tonight. They’re 15-years-old to 18 from what I’ve seen,” he added.

“The only outcome we could hope for is that they might get caught this time and that will put a stop to it.

“There wasn’t a lot of damage this time, but we probably lost about £1,000 on the three cars and lost an entire day to tidy it up.”
