Council “considering” options after petition lodged to cut speeding in Aberdeenshire village

The local authority is considering introducing a mandatory 20mph speed limit in a north-east fishing village.

Aberdeenshire Council announced the traffic review in Inverallochy after local woman Patricia McKenzie began gathering support for a reduction of the speed limit on Allochy Road following a recent accident involving a dog.

Ms McKenzie said she wanted to have the 30mph limit cut “before someone gets killed”.

Her campaign won the backing of more than 60 villagers, who submitted a petition to the council.

Ms McKenzie said: “The speed they go up and down that road is ridiculous.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed or knocked down.”

Local councillor Charles Buchan said he was aware speeding was an issue on the road.

“It has been brought up quite a lot at community council meetings in the past,” he said.

“You really have to congratulate Ms McKenzie for having the initiative to get this petition together. The council has said they’re looking at the speeding on the road now – so that’s something.

“When I was first elected, I raised this issue with the police. The problem is that the road is so wide and straight that it is very hard for some people not to be tempted to speed.

“Local residents are now terrified to walk across the road and are scared if their pets or children get out from their gardens and on to it.”

Philip McKay, Aberdeenshire Council’s head of roads and landscape services, said: “As part of an ongoing traffic review across Banff and Buchan, we are considering the implementation of a mandatory 20mph speed limit throughout the village of Inverallochy.”
