Storm Jake seems to have landed in the north-east as Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire saw snow showers begin in the early afternoon.
The Met Office has put a Yellow severe weather warning on much of Scotland.
Wintry showers will continue through Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with some snow expected on higher ground.
Clear spells between showers will allow ice to form on untreated surfaces.
The Met Office chief forecaster said: “Please be aware of some difficult driving conditions and the possibility of some low-level disruption.
“Showers or more persistent areas of rain will continue through Wednesday night across northern and eastern England as well as parts of Scotland.
“This could fall as snow on hills, however the main threat is for ice, especially with clear spells between the showers allowing untreated surfaces to freeze. The showers could also lead to some wash-off of salt from roads that have already been treated.”
