Fraserburgh set for further expansion at new neighbourhood

Plans have been lodged for the next phase in a massive expansion of a north-east town.

The Merryhillock housing scheme, to the west of Fraserburgh, will create homes for more than 500 families, and significantly increase the port’s population of 13,000.

The first phase of the development is already underway and Peterhead firm, Claymore Homes, has now tabled a proposal to build a second phase of 31 properties.

In a design statement, submitted to Aberdeenshire Council’s planning team, a Claymore spokesman said: “The site is the second phase of the Claymore Homes development at Greenbank Village in Fraserburgh which forms part of the approved Merryhillock master plan.

“The first phase is well under way and is sold out and a high demand exists for the second phase.

“It is now essential for the company work programme to secure a further consent as part of the overall master plan.”

The proposed expansion of the Merryhillock site – which will include detached and semi-detached homes – has been backed by the local authority’s housing team.

In a letter to planners, affordable housing officer Elise Young said: “The proposal meets housing need, as supported by Aberdeenshire Council’s waiting list.

“It is also in accordance with the Local Development Plan’s affordable housing policy providing an onsite contribution of 25%.”

She added that the developer should keep in close contact with the housing team to ensure the affordable homes – which will help the council clear a 10,000 applicant waiting list – are delivered by the end of this year.

Claymore Homes has recently lodged an application to build more than 200 homes on the outskirts of Peterhead, and has expressed an interested in developing a large site to the west of the Buchan Coast village of Cruden Bay.
