Police appeal for information following wilful fire-raising at Aberdeen bowling club

Officers in Bridge of Don are appealing for information following a report of a wilful fire at Bridge of Don’s Grandholm Bowling Club.

The fire began shortly after midnight last night, causing extensive damage to the pavillion building.

Fire services sent three appliances to the bowling club after receiving a call at 12.20am and used one hose reel jet and a 45-metre hose to tackle the blaze.

The crews also disconnected the electricity in the building.

The final fire vehicle left the premises at 4am after the area was secured.

Investigating officer PC Claire Low from the Bridge of Don Community Policing Team said: “Although the premises were unoccupied at the time of the incident, such thoughtless and reckless behaviour has the potential to put the safety of others and their properties at risk, as well as the obvious financial implications for the owner of the buildings.

“Such dangerous and anti-social behaviour by those persons responsible will not be tolerated.”

The Grandholm Bowling Club has been set alight several times by young people in the past.

The derelict building was forced to close last year following numerous break-ins and deliberate fires. The building was originally thought to have been council owned, but after inquiries were made, it was found to be private.
