Two supersize Aberdeen bunnies are taking part in a national pet-slimming competition.

Rabbits Poppy and Joey, owned by Donna Manson, of Bridge of Don, will take part in the Pet Fit Club competition run by the PDSA.

Poppy, who weighs in at 7lb 4oz, and Joey, at 8lb 7oz, will compete in the weight loss competition against two cats, morbidly obese Tom, from Glasgow, and tubby Zorro, from Dundee.

Mrs Manson, 48, said: “Over the winter time I think we just bulked them up a bit too much. We’ve now cut the treats right back but we have been feeding them portions that are probably too large.

“I’ve tried to cut down on the carrots and apples, as I’ve recently learned that they are both high in sugar and not the healthy snacks I thought they were.

“Another thing that came to light was that I’d often give them a little treat during the day and when my daughter got back from college she hadn’t realised I’d given them a snack and she would give them something too.”

Andy Cage, a senior veterinary surgeon from Dundee’s PetAid hospital, said: “Obesity is one of the biggest welfare issues affecting pets in the UK today.

“Sadly, it also means millions of pets are at risk from potentially life-threatening health problems related to obesity. But the good news is that obesity is entirely reversible.”
