Aberdeen charity raising money for Portuguese dogs

An Aberdeen charity is appealing for donations for a Portuguese animal charity.

Friends of Bianca (FOB), which was set up by Aberdeen playwright Mike Gibb, is raising money to build enclosures for around 300 abandoned and stray dogs being looked after by Portuguese charity Bianca.

The charity has taken in 90 dogs in the past three months, many of whom are chained to wooden shelters because kennel costs are so high.

FOB has already helped rebuild the perimeter of the shelter and have money allocated for an animal treatment room, and are now looking to build more enclosures to house the animals.

Mr Gibb said: “Each enclosure costs about £350. We want to build another three units of nine enclosures and that will mean every dog there is off a chain and at least has somewhere to move about.”

Individuals, companies and groups are all asked to donate, and the contributions will be recognised with a plaque attached to the kennel featuring their name.

The first unit of enclosures has already been built and started housing animals last month. They provide space for up to four dogs to run about, as well as shelter from the sun which can reach around 36C during the day.

Money raised by Bianca goes straight to helping the animals. As a result the charity only has four paid staff and relies heavily on support from volunteers.

Mr Gibb said: “We’re always looking for volunteers. There are three sets going out this year from Friends of Bianca.

“They only have four paid kennel maids for over 300 dogs, so they’re always looking for volunteers to help out. They rely very much on volunteers to walk dogs and things.

“It’s near Lisbon and near the beaches so people can do a wee bit of work and have a holiday as well.”
