Top businesses swing into action to support charity golf fundraiser

Friends of ANCHOR confirm Craig Group and The Chester Hotel are to sponsor the charity Gala Golf Event.
Friends of ANCHOR confirm Craig Group and The Chester Hotel are to sponsor the charity Gala Golf Event.

Two prominent north-east businesses are swinging into action to support a massive fundraiser in honour of a local cancer charity.

The Friends of ANCHOR Gala Golf Event will return next year, after raising a massive £75,000 this year – the highest total to date.

Now Douglas Craig, of the Craig Group, and Chris Quinn-Waugh, general manager of the Chester Hotel in Aberdeen, have signed their companies up as the top sponsors for next year’s event to ensure it as just as successful.

Money raised at the event – which includes a golf day at Peterculter Golf Course and dinner at the hotel on June 10 – will be invested for clinical care, research and well-being support at the ANCHOR unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Yesterday, the charity’s chairman Jim Milne said that a time when businesses across the region are struggling, he was in debt to those who continue pledging their support to people in need.

“At a time when the industry is going through significant challenges, the news of the sponsorship from two top companies in the city boldly demonstrates the business sector’s admirable commitment to continuing its crucial support of the charity sector,” he said.

“We don’t, by any means, take that financial support for granted and as a charity we are indebted to businesses like the Chester Hotel and Craig Group who continue to partner with us to help continue the work of Friends of ANCHOR for north-east cancer and haematology patients.”

At this year’s tournament, European Tour pro-golfer and Friends of ANCHOR’s Gala Golf patron Richie Ramsay stepped in to show attendees how its done.

He will also appear next year if his tournament schedule allows.

Douglas Craig, a long-standing supporter of the event, said it was important for businesses to do what they can to inject cash into services which help local people.

“It is always a real honour to be involved with this event, every business backing the tournament knows just how significant their support is in aiding Friends of ANCHOR’s commitment to those fighting a cancer diagnosis,” he said.

“We are in the midst of a challenging time for many businesses but it’s important we don’t hold back in supporting organisations that play a vital role in enhancing the lives of many in our community.”
