Vandals smash in windows of eight cars across two Aberdeenshire communities

Police are investigating the incidents in Kemnay and Kintore

A wrecking spree caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to parked cars and left roads and pavements littered with glass.

The vandals are being sought by police after smashing the windows of at least eight vehicles in Kintore and Kemnay before making of “at speed” in a car.

The total cost of the damage was estimated as being up to £3,000 yesterday but a police spokesman said the overall loss was still being confirmed.

Officers believe the vandalism was carried out by the same group of individuals using one car.

Nothing was stolen from any of the wrecked cars and officers are still working to identify what was used to smash the windows.

Among the cars targeted were a Ford Focus, a Vauxhall Corsa, a Volkswagen Golf, a Honda Civic and a Nissan Note.

In Kintore, vehicles in Townhead Terrace, Hallforest Avenue, Kingsfield Road and The Square were targeted, as were cars on Fraser Place and Kendal Road in Kemnay.

The incidents took place between midnight on Wednesday and 3am on Thursday.

Kingsfield Road resident Kat Stewart said three cars on the street had been “smashed in”.

The 33-year-old added: “Glass was all over the place, it was all over the pavement and all over the road.

“I think it is less worrying than getting broke into. And as far as I am aware nothing has been stolen.

“This is probably one of the quietest streets in Kintore. The only people that come by is people that live here or tractors. I feel quite safe.”

One man whose car was singled out by the vandals in Kintore said he had to pay £100 for a replacement rear windshield.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: “It was just parked around the corner there and yesterday morning I woke up and the back window was smashed in.”

PC Mark Chappell said: “It would appear that the culprits used a motor vehicle in order to commit these crimes and make off from the scenes at speed.

“Anyone who may have seen any suspicious vehicles in the area around these times should contact Police Scotland.

“Despite these incidents, Aberdeenshire remains an extremely safe place to live, with relatively low crime rates compared to the rest of the county.

“We will be increasing dedicated patrols in the Kintore and Kemnay areas to deter further incidents and reassure members of our local communities.”
