Two men have died after a light aircraft crashed into the sea off the west coast.

Police have launched an investigation into the crash, which happened two miles off the coast of Skipness in the Mull of Kintyre on Thursday afternoon.

The plane left Oban Airport, north Connel, at around 11.30am and the alarm was raised when it failed to arrive at its destination at Carlisle Airport at 1pm.

A police spokeswoman said: “The bodies of two men and some wreckage from the aircraft were recovered in the sea near to Skipness, Argyll.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the identities of the two men on board and post mortem examinations will be carried out in due course.

“Police Scotland is investigating to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact DI Douglas Wilson at L Division CID via 101 and quote incident number 2167 of Thursday May 25.

“The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is conducting an independent safety investigation.”

A helicopter from Prestwick and four lifeboats were sent to the scene yesterday, where debris was found.

A coastguard spokesman said yesterday: “Police Scotland were assisting the Maritime and Coastguard Agency following a report of a light aircraft crash around 3.45pm this afternoon around two miles off Skipness in the Mull of Kintyre.

“After an extensive search, which included rescue 999 from Prestwick, Tarbert and Campbeltown coastguard teams and Tighnabruaich and Arran lifeboat, there was debris found.”
