“Disrespectful” vandals have targeted a collection box at one of the country’s most famous military monuments.
The box, located at the Commando Memorial near Spean Bridge in Lochaber, was discovered extensively damaged earlier this week after opportunists made an attempt to steal public donations placed inside.
The incident is believed to have occurred sometime in the last two weeks, with vandals appearing to have struck the object with some kind of tool in a desperate attempt to gain access.
Fortunately, no money was taken from the box as the culprits failed to break the chunky padlock sealing the box shut.
Allan Henderson, councillors for Caol and Mallaig, said: “I think as any councillor or resident would say, it’s extremely disappointing. We all hold the Commando Memorial association in highest regard and we wouldn’t expect this from any member of the public.
“This is not the first time this has happened, we all know there are opportunists out there and over the years there has been an extremely stout bolt and padlock put onto it. They are doing their work but it’s really disappointing people even try it.”
All money collected in the box is used to maintain the upkeep of the category A listed monument commemorating the original soldiers of the British Commando Forces.
Police are now appealing for information in an attempt to bring the culprits to justice.
Constable Brian Heriot said: “This is a particularly disrespectful act given the location of this collection box and what the funds are used for
“We would urge anybody who saw anything suspicious in the area or has information which could assist us to get in touch as soon as possible.”
