Two people have been arrested after a 40-year-old woman was found dead in Shetland.

The body of the mother-of-one Tracy Walker was discovered in Lerwick and detectives from Police Scotland’s Major Investigations Team have flown to the island.

A man, 31, and a woman, 27, have now been arrested in connection with her death.

Last night, the victim’s brother, Dell Smith, 43, said: “She was the best human being you could meet. All the cliches – good and warm-hearted.”

Police were called to the Ladies Drive area of Lerwick at around 2.05am after concerns were raised and officers manned the main airport and harbour following the discovery.

Detective Inspector Ross Fitzgerald of the Police Scotland Major Investigation Team said: “Our inquiries remain ongoing and are at a relatively early stage.

“However, I would take the opportunity to stress there is no apparent risk to the wider community.

“A significant police presence is likely to remain in the area during the coming days, with officers from the local policing team in Lerwick working with specialist colleagues from the major investigations team.

“We are grateful to the community for their understanding while this investigation continues.”

Shetland Islands Council convener Malcolm Bell, the former area police commander in the islands who now represents the Lerwick North constituency where the tragedy happened described the death as “a shocking tragedy”.

He added: “It is not something you would expect in Lerwick, or Shetland.

“Our thoughts go out to all those who are affected by this death. It is clearly something that does not happen often in the islands.

“My understanding is the police are following a line of inquiry and members of the public should be reassured by this.”
