A groundbreaking conference is being hosted by NHS Highland in Aviemore today.

Harm reduction, substance misuse and the recovery agenda are just some of the topics which will be discussed.

The national conference, Harm Reduction Now and the Future, is the first of its kind to be held by NHS Highland.

Delegates from across the country and further afield will be in attendance and focus on the day will also include overdose prevention and stigma.

They will also discuss the use of opiate countering drug naloxone.

This morning delegates have been watching a series of presentations on harm reduction, while the afternoon will be an open debate, chaired by journalist and health communications specialist Pennie Taylor, allowing delegates to pose questions to a panel of experts.

Lisa Ross, clinical harm reduction nurse specialist for NHS Highland, said: “This conference provides an opportunity to review current harm reduction practices both nationally and internationally and to examine the future potential for harm reduction within the recovery agenda.

“Our speakers have a vast range of experience and knowledge within the harm reduction field and I am looking forward to a lively debate in the afternoon.”

As well as Lisa speakers on the day include Eliza Wheeler from Drug Overdose and Prevention (Dope) in San Francisco; and Neil McKeganey, director of the Centre for Drug Misuse Research.

Ms Ross said: “Those attending the conference range from those who work in, are involved with or have an interest in harm reduction, substance use and the recovery agenda, including those who manage and deliver services.

“Anyone interested in what is happening on the day can keep up with the conversation by following the hashtag #HRNAF and we also hope to make all presentations available after the event.”
