A funeral service will be held next week for a Highland climber who died after falling 2,000ft in the Canadian Rockies.

Neil MacKenzie, originally of Flichity, south of Inverness, was ice climbing on Mount Joffre in British Columbia on January 11 when the tragic accident happened.

He and his two companions who also died, Elena Cernicka, 35, of North Vancouver, and Stephanie Grothe, 30, originally from Germany, fell down a mountain passage near Whistler.

Mr MacKenzie, 31, was a biologist who had been living in Vancouver since June 2013 while he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Blood Research.

Mr MacKenzie is survived by his parents, Angus and Margaret, who run the Brin Herb Nursery, and sister, Caroline.

At the time of this death, Mr MacKenzie’s family said they were taking comfort from the fact he was doing what he loved when he died.

The funeral service will take place at Inverness Crematorium on Friday February 6 at 2.30pm followed by a gathering at Farr Hall.

Family flowers only are requested and any donations given at the service will be given to the Mountain Bothies Association.
