Food finally rolls into Shetland following days of high winds and no deliveries

There’s never been a better time to consider the future of farming in Scotland says Jenn Stewart.
There’s never been a better time to consider the future of farming in Scotland says Jenn Stewart.

A social media video has showed the utter joy at food arriving in Shetland after ferries failed to get to the islands for four days.

Following videos and pictures coming out of the island at the weekend showing bare shelves in Lerwick, shoppers were asked “are you ready for this?”.

Cages of food were taken from nine HGV lorries to refill the shelves of the town’s Tesco supermarket.

12 hours of unloading wagons

The TikTok video has been shared dozens of times, with the contributor @quobster, Kelly Anderson, showing just how many supplies were needed on the island.

After showing a video of the empty shelves, the unpacking of the lorries began.

They said it took 12 hours of unloading wagons to get the shelves re-stocked with goods.

Last week islanders were left without supplies when boats could not get to the island.

Fruit, vegetable and bread aisles in Lerwick’s supermarkets were empty – while other refrigerated items were running low too.

Comments on the TikTok post from people from Shetland and further afield celebrated the good news.

One commenter, Stephanie Lynes, said: “The fact that there was toilet roll left blows my mind.”

Lisa Lloyd joked: “And you’d still have someone approach you and ask for something at the bottom of the cage with everything stacked on top of it.”
