14-turbine windfarm welcomed by Skye crofter

A Skye crofters’ spokesman has welcomed a recommendation of Highland Council officers that a 14-turbine windfarm proposed for Struan on the west coast of the island is agreed by councillors.

The north area planning committee will consider the application at a meeting in Dingwall on Tuesday.

The 390ft-high towers would form the Glen Ullinish windfarm.

Angus Munro, chairman of the Ebost Grazings Committee, said: “We are delighted that following years of hard work on the project Glen Ullinish has received a recommendation for approval.

“It represents a massive opportunity for the local area and it is vital that the view of the local community is heard.

“The planners’ recommendation is the first step forward in making this potential investment a reality.”

Civil engineering firm Kilmac Construction, who are working in close partnership with local crofters on the project, submitted the planning application to the council last October.

It says the Scottish Government, as owner of the land, is “supporting the partnership approach being taken.”

The scheme promises enough annual electricity to power the needs of 23,000 homes and £250,000 per year for local initiatives.

Kilmac Construction is currently in the process of opening a new office in Inverness.
