The cordoned off flat in Wick's Huddart Street, where a fire led to a mans arrest.

A man is due to appear in court on Monday in connection with a flat fire in a Caithness town.

Two appliances from Wick attended the ground floor property in the town’s Huddart Street following the 999 call at about 6.45pm on Thursday.

The three-storey building was evacuated as fire crews battled the flames.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames and a thermal imaging to check for remaining hotspots.

A fire service spokesman said: “A bedroom inside the property was 100% destroyed as well as half of a hallway.”

Yesterday at the scene, a police van could be seen parked outside the front of the property, which was cordoned off with police tape.

The stone wall above the front door to the flat was heavily stained with black smoke and several windows had been opened to air the building.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is expected to appear at Wick Sheriff Court on Monday.

Fire crews in Caithness were kept busy later on when they received another 999 call about a 21-tonne excavator which had caught fire in Mybster, between Latheron and Thurso.

A single appliance from Wick was called to the scene shortly before 2.45am yesterday morning, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to put out the flames by about 3.30am.

This same appliance had to be called away from an earlier road traffic collision on the A99 Latheron-Wick road, just south of Lybster, which was called in at about 2.30am.

Two fire appliances from Wick and one crew from Thurso went to the scene but, upon arrival, one casualty was already being treated by paramedics for minor injuries. No cutting gear was required to free anyone from the vehicle.

Further north in Shetland, the Lerwick Harbour master raised the alarm with police and Shetland coastguard when he spotted a man in his 20s in the water.

The call was made at about 11.50pm on Thursday and police assisted the harbour master in helping the man out of the water.

The man was transferred to an ambulance and was treated for hypothermia and a police spokeswoman said that he is recovering.
