The Belladrum festival hit full swing last night as thousands of revellers packed into the site.

Legendary Welsh rockers the Manic Street Preachers headlined the first full day of the 12th Tartan Heart Festival last night with a spectacular show packed with hits.

Indie favourites Kaiser Chiefs will bring the event to a rousing finale tonight on the main stage.

Spirits were high yesterday at the site near Beauly in Inverness-shire after The Proclaimers opened the festival in style on Belladrum’s first ever Thursday night.

The festival has historically started on Fridays but festival organiser Joe Gibbs decided to put on a show a day earlier because of the number of people who arrive to camp on Thursdays.

Mr Gibbs hailed the innovation as helping set the foundations for this weekend’s festivities.

He said: “It’s all gone remarkably well. The Proclaimers were very successful and they brought the sunshine with them, from Leith.

“It’s all been very smooth and it’s great to see everybody enjoying themselves.”

Mr Gibbs said last night he was especially looking forward to the Manic Street Preachers and the folk act Blackbeard’s Party who were appearing on the Grassroots stage.

The festival was starting to come to life early yesterday afternoon.

One of the biggest crowds was not for a music act but the daredevil stunts performed by Skye cyclist Danny MacAskill who brought his Drop and Roll tour to the festival.

A steady stream of fans were also drawn to check out a show by Premier British Wrestling.

And on the main Garden stage the successors to the Singing Kettle, Funbox, prompted a mass singalong with family favourites such as Over the Irish Sea.

The star-packed line-up last night also included Motown legends Martha Reeves and Vandellas who had the crowd dancing in the streets.

Influential Scottish rock band Idlewild took to the stage before the Manics, while former Fairground Attraction star Eddi Reader headlined the Black Isle Brewery Grassroots stage.

Kaiser Chiefs are returning to tghe Highlands for the first time since 2008 when they played at Strathpeffer Pavilion.
