Funding for five Safer Routes to School projects in the Inverness area has been approved Highland Council’s City of Inverness Committee.
Members approved project applications for the Scottish Government’s Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets Programme totalling an estimated £76,000.
They include projects to install drop-off zones at Lochardil Primary (£20,000) and Raigmore Primary (£12,000).
At Inshes Primary, £12,000 and Duncan Forbes Primary £14,000 will be used to encourage walking to school with the installation of road markings, pedestrian railing, and signage among other Park & Stride options.
At Crown Primary £20,000 will be used to install secure cycle storage facilities.
Council Leader, Councillor Drew Hendry said: “The clear aims of the Safer Routes to Schools Projects under the Scottish Government’s Cycling Walking and Safer Streets Programme are to improve child safety and save lives by encouraging sustainable and active travel.
“This programme aligns with the council’s commitment for Inverness to be a carbon neutral city in a low Carbon Highlands by 2025. I welcome the introduction of these projects and look forward to more ideas coming forward from the Road Safety Unit in conjunction with our schools on how they can create safer travel to school while reducing their local carbon footprint.”
