The organisers of an unofficial car cruise which took place in the Highland capital at the weekend have hailed it a success.

More than 50 drivers showed off their customised vehicles at the event at Inverness Retail Park in Eastfield Way.

Police had issued a warning to motorists about potential traffic congestion and delays in the area.

But a spokeswoman confirmed yesterday that “no serious incidents” were recorded.

At Saturday’s event, which lasted from about 8pm to midnight, a mix of younger and older drivers gathered to discuss their cars and get advice on how to improve them.

Cars on show included a Nissan GTR, a Toyota Supra and a number of Ford Focus STs.

The event was organised by Done Up Cars, a group which uses a social networking site to communicate with its members.

Maggie Millar travelled from Bathgate in West Lothian to be at the car cruise.

She is the founder of Grid Girl Racers, a car club which engages with a police liaison officer who ensures that members keep their cars legal and safe.

She said: “The car cruise was fantastic. These events are really about social networking and people with the same cars with different modifications coming together and sharing ideas.

“There are guys out there that maybe don’t have a lot of money and they love to make their cars their pride and joy and show them off.

“I have got teenage kids and I would far rather them gathering in a car park and talking about cars than drinking and taking drugs.

“In our group the police liaison officer can help keep all of our members legal, so if they want to do a modification they know where the limits are and they can get advice.”

Evan MacKintosh, one of the event organisers, said: “It was a success. We are about to talk to the police about trying to get some kind of liaison for these events to keep everyone safe.

“The organised car cruises keeps people off the streets and from causing trouble and it’s all about meeting new people.”
