A woman has been sexually assaulted in a “distressing” attack in the centre of Lerwick.

Police in the Shetland capital are hunting for two men after the incident in the early hours of Monday morning.

Officers were called after the incident happened around 1.15am in the Mullay’s Steps area near Commercial Street.

Lerwick is currently packed with hundreds of revellers celebrating the Up Helly Aa fire festival.

The attack happened shortly after shutting time in the town’s pubs.

Manager of Albert Place pub The Lounge, Senga Priestley, said reports of sexual assault were unusual in the town.

She added: “It’s very rare here, especially on Up Helly Aa week.

“Quite a few pubs had music on, and they all closed at 1am.

“There’s CCTV on Commercial Street though, hopefully that can help the police.”

Police continued their investigations at the scene yesterday and have urged anyone with information to make contact.

Officers are particularly keen to speak to two men in connection with the incident.

They are both described as being white with fair hair, standing around 6ft in height and of stocky build.

Their age and clothing is not currently known.

Detective Inspector Andy Logan said: “This is a particularly distressing incident and I am appealing to anyone who was in Lerwick last night into the early hours of this morning and has information that could assist our investigation to come forward.

“Officers are continuing to carry out inquiries into this incident and I would like to reassure the public that we are using all available means to identify the persons responsible.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland urgently on 101”.
