Fundraising cycle in memory of Moray teen is rescheduled after rain delay

A fundraising cycle in memory of a Moray teenager who died following a battle with cancer has been rescheduled.

Elgin Cycling Club was due to take to the road in May to support Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation.

However, the event was cancelled just minutes before it was due to start following an extreme bout of rain.

Organisers have now rescheduled the event for Sunday, August 18, to ensure the charity, which was set up by Elgin 15-year-old Abbie Main before her death in December 2017, can still benefit from support.

More than 100 cyclists will take part in the event next week, which includes a 62-mile loop from Elgin to Nairn and a 31-mile option between Elgin and Forres.

Organiser Linda Smith said: “All of our riders and supporters have been incredibly generous.  Everyone understood our decision to stop the ride only 90 minutes before the original start time.

“This event is not a race but a challenge. The course will test both experienced and novice cyclists, but the main aim is to raise money for a great cause while having fun, cycling through fantastic countryside in the company of fellow cyclists.”

Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation was set up to support children with cancer, as well as their families, with costs associated with treatment.

Cyclists can enter the event at www.eventbrite.co.uk with admission priced at £15 for the longer course, and £10 for the shorter one.
