Scottish Water start Keith flooding project

Scottish Water has started work on a major project in Moray which aims to remove three properties from the flooding register.

The work in Keith is intended to alleviate the risk to homes in Moss Street.

It involves replacing approximately 400ft of the existing sewer with a new system which will offer a higher capacity for dealing with flood waters.

The new “box sewer” will cover a 394ft stretch of Moss Street between Findlater Lane and Broad Lane.

The project is due to be completed by the end of March.

Scottish Water project manager Andy Ducat said: “The new sewer is what we call a box sewer and involves the lift and re-lay of the existing water main along this route, so there will be a temporary overland pipe, which will keep water supplies in place for our customers.

“There will be traffic management in Moss Street during the works. This will be done in sections and the traffic management will move as per the progress of work. During the work there will also be occasions where there will be no vehicular access both to and from Moss Street from Findlater Lane, Smiddie Lane, Spinners Lane, Fairmers Lane and Broad Lane.

“Local diversions will be in place and will be adequately signed. Should there be any time when access is restricted, our contractors, George Leslie Ltd, will liaise with affected customers.

“There will be construction traffic and noise during the work, however we will try to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

Some short interruptions to the water supply are likely while the works are being carried out. Customers will be notified in advance.

Since it was formed in 2002, Scottish Water has invested £56million in Moray with a further £7.5million planned by 2015.
