Moray woman made to pay for racist tirade

Elgin Sheriff Court
Elgin Sheriff Court.

A woman launched into a racist tirade and told an Irish bouncer to “go back to his own country” after being refused entry to an Elgin bar.

Sharon Clark accused bouncer Philip Moran of “taking our jobs” and slapped him on the head after he told her she was too drunk to get into The Granary last month.

The 43-year-old admitted acting in a racially aggravated manner on March 14 when she appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday.

Procurator fiscal deputy Kelly Mitchell told the court: “Clark approached the bar after 10pm on the night in question, and members of the door staff were of the opinion she’d had too much to drink and refused her entry.

“She attempted to argue but they ignored her hoping she would leave.

“The accused was heard to say something to Philip Moran about immigrants coming over to our country and taking our jobs.

“The gentleman is from Ireland and speaks with an Irish accent.”

The fiscal added that Clark had then asked the group: “Where’s he from? He’s not from this country.”

Clark, of Flat E, 12 Pinegrove, Elgin, also assaulted fellow bouncer Norbert Ciuk by kicking him in the leg, before kicking onlooker Helen Ross on the shin.

Defence agent Matthew O’Neill said Clark had been out drinking with her father on the night of the incident, and allowed the “too much alcohol” to “get the better of her”.

He added: “My client really is ashamed of her behaviour on that evening.”

Sheriff Susan Raeburn ordered Clark to pay each of her victims compensation – with £300 to Mr Moran and £150 to both Mr Ciuk and Ms Ross. She also banned Clark from The Granary for one year.
