A man was seriously injured after a two vehicle crash on a north-east road yesterday.

The collision happened on the A90 Peterhead to Ellon road near Hatton garage at about 6am.

Emergency crews were called to the scene following the smash which involved a white Volkswagen caddy and a blue Audi.

Fire crews had to use an electric saw to free the van driver from the wreckage and he was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance.

Police said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening, but “potentially life-changing.”

Part of the road was closed to allow vehicle recovery work to take place and it was fully reopened just before 10am.

A police spokesman said: “There was initially a male trapped within the van.

“The road was closed at the Berryflacks junction with the A90 and traffic was being diverted via the Toll of Birness, up to the A950 and back on to the A90.”

The van involved belonged to Ellon-based building company James Jamieson construction.

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed crews were involved in the incident.

She said: “Crews had to use cutting gear and an electrical saw to release one person.

“There were two appliances at the scene, one from Ellon and one from Peterhead.”

It is the second road crash to have happened on roads in the Buchan area in recent days.

A 22-year-man was taken to hospital following a crash between a Mazda 3 and Land Rover Discovery on the A952 late on Saturday night.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and have said their inquiries are at an “early stage”.

Peterhead South and Cruden Bay councillor Alan Fakley urged motorists to take care when travelling around the area.

He said: “I drive on these roads all the time and I would implore people to drive to the conditions.”
