Hope for action on Peterhead’s blackspot road

Safety improvements could be made to a Peterhead accident blackspot after a 10-year-old boy was struck by a car on Friday night.

The boy was hit on the A982 South Road at the roundabout between McDonalds and Meethill Road and was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

It is the third accident on the road in two weeks with a lorry overturning on March 11 and a two-vehicle crash on March 13 which ended in five people being taken to ARI suffering from chest, rib and stomach injuries.

While the boy injured on Friday did not suffer any life-threatening injuries, there are now questions over whether anything can be done to prevent any future incidents.

Aberdeenshire Council is expected to review road safety on the route if the police report into Friday’s incident highlights any weaknesses.

Reducing the speed limit and better lighting are already under consideration for the stretch.

Councillor Stuart Pratt, the chairman of the Buchan area committee said last night. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on it,”

“The police and the council will be investigating it and if there’s any works that need done then I’m sure we’ll hear about them in due course and we’ll get them done.”

Gary Collins, the vice-chairman of Peterhead’s safety group, added that drivers needed to be better educated on the risks of driving at night.

He said: “It’s the main road into Peterhead, so we’re looking at maybe reducing the speed limit and better lighting.

“It’s about making people aware of how to drive in darkness, and making sure that they’re able to. It’s all about making sure they’re fit. If they’re struggling for vision at night, then they shouldn’t be driving. We need to educate people.”
