VIDEO: Pike-mounted camera offers stunning new perspective of north-east Highland gathering

The Lonach Highland Gathering and Games is one of Scotland’s oldest and most iconic traditional events – and now the public have been given a new stunning perspective of the annual spectacle.

Organised by the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society, the gathering will take place tomorrow for the 175th time and features the unique march of the Lonach Highlanders.

A short video has just been released by the society which allows people to experience what it is like to be part of this distinctive Aberdeenshire parade.

The footage was filmed last year on a GoPro camera mounted on a pike being carried by one of the highlanders as the group marched to Braemar.

It gives those who watch the annual Strathdon march from the side-lines the chance to experience it from the perspective of those marching.

Jennifer Stewart, secretary and chief executive of the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society, said: “The annual march of the Lonach Highlanders is one of the real highlights of the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games.

The Lonach Highland Gathering and Games

“It is a tradition that generations of Lonach Highlanders have participated in and upheld, following in the footsteps of their ancestors.

“For over 175 years, people have stood at the roadside and watched as the highlanders march through Strathdon. Many people follow the 8am march, which is an incredible sight and sound.

“Only those who have been Lonach Highlanders know what it really feels like to be part of that.

“This fantastic video gives ordinary folk the chance to experience the march from a Lonach Highlander’s perspective.

“We hope that by releasing this footage we can inspire many of the local youngsters who will be lining the route on Saturday to join the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society in years to come and uphold our traditions and heritage.”
