Ross County came from behind to defeat Kilmarnock 2-1 at Rugby Park, with the result clinching ninth place.

Greg Kiltie opened for the scoring for Killie before half-time, however goals from Liam Boyce and Rocco Quinn ensured the Staggies finish the season on a high.

County made two changes from the side that defeated Hamilton Accies 2-1 last weekend to preserve its Premiership status, bringing youngster Tony Dingwall into the side in place of Craig Curran, while defender Scott Boyd returned from suspension in place of Filip Kiss.

Killie were also safe following their emphatic 4-1 win against Partick Thistle last Saturday, making four changes. Conor Brennan, Lee Ashcroft, Aaron Splaine and Mark O’Hara came in, while Craig Samson, Jamie Hamill, Darryl Westlake and Manuel Pascali dropped out.

County applied the early pressure, and Liam Boyce had the ball in the net within two minutes, however his neat finish was ruled out for offside.

Staggies midfielder Michael Gardyne provided the game’s first shot on target, but shot straight at goalkeeper Brennan from the inside right channel. County came the closest to opening the scoring midway through the first-half when Martin Woods’ shot was tipped on to the post by Brennan.

However Killie edged into the lead on 36 minutes. Woods gave the ball straight to Killie forward Josh Magennis, with the former Aberdeen player squaring for Greg Kiltie to coolly slot past Antonio Reguero.

Moments later, the outgoing Reguero made a save for Staggies supporters to remember him for, diving to superbly tip teenage debutant Splaine’s long-range effort over. From the resulting corner, Tope Obadeyi headed wide.

After the break, Boyce was first to threaten for the visitors with a free-kick that forced Brennan to stoop low to his right to tip wide. However, there was no denying Boyce on 63 minutes, as he diverted Marcus Fraser’s cross into the net for his 11th goal of the season.

The goal put a spring into County’s step, and they notched the winner with 14 minutes left. Boyce played a delightful reverse pass into the path of Quinn, who coolly slid the ball into the bottom corner.

Outgoing captain Richard Brittain was brought on immediately after the goal, to a standing ovation from the Staggies supporters, keen to mark the end of his seven-year stay with the club after he was released from his contract last weekend.

County held on, with the result capping off a tremendous revival in the second half of the campaign.
