Steven Whittaker: Scotland are better than last year

Defender Steven Whittaker believes the current Scotland team is superior to the one that ran England so close at Wembley last year.

Gordon Strachan’s side was defeated 3-2 after having twice been in front but will head into tomorrow’s match in buoyant mood following Friday’s excellent 1-0 win against Republic of Ireland.

That result, which came courtesy of Shaun Maloney’s second-half winner, has enhanced Scotland’s prospects of progressing from the Euro 2016 qualifiers to a major international tournament once again.

There will be only pride to play for when Roy Hodgson’s men come to Parkhead tomorrow evening but Norwich City defender Whittaker, pictured, is confident the national team can rise to the occasion once again.

He said: “The hype over the past week was all about the Ireland game and it is great we got the three points we wanted.

“Now we can focus on England. Our personnel is similar to the last time we faced them at Wembley. The squad has not changed that much since then.

“I thoroughly enjoyed that game. We gave a good account of ourselves and were a little bit disappointed not to take something from that game.

“Hopefully we can get a positive result this time.

There is possibly a little bit more belief in the team since we went to Wembley.

“The momentum and run we have been on since Gordon Strachan came in has given us confidence.

“Everything feels positive at the moment.”

England may not be as strong as it once was but Whittaker remains cautious of a side that has the likes of Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere at their disposal.

But the 30-year-old believes the Scots can take confidence from their impressive display against world champions Germany in Dortmund in September when they suffered a narrow 2-1 loss.

Whittaker said: “England are right up there with the best teams, but we have competed against Germany and drawn 2-2 in Poland.

“We need to go into the game with a positive mentality as we have competed against good sides.

“Players want to play in the big occasions and we are looking forward to it.

“A lot of people said we did well at Wembley but we got beat 3-2.

“The performance was there but this time we want the result.”

Former Rangers player Whittaker relished the bruising encounter with Ireland on Friday and said it reminded him of his derby matches against Celtic.

He added: “Before the game, people were saying that the game wouldn’t be played like a typical international match and that probably proved to be the case. There was a very British feel to the game.

“Ireland tried to hit their big men up front quite a lot and we had to stand up and deal with that.

“It felt like we managed to do that and we also showed our class with the football that the manager is trying to get us to play.

“I enjoyed the physical nature of the match. Both teams were showing the will to win and that is what you expect.

“There were a few hard tackles here and there but it was all played in good spirit.

“It felt like an Old Firm game, especially late on when we were in the lead and they were pushing to get back in the match.”
