Tony Watt has ended his spell in Belgian football by signing for English Championship outfit Charlton Athletic.

The 21-year-old striker joined Standard Liege from Celtic during the summer, after a loan spell at Lierse in Belgium.

However, after just 17 appearances he has moved on again, signing a three and a half year deal after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Charlton head coach Bob Peeters said: “He’s a striker who will add something to our team.

“He’s a guy who can score goals, he has a lot of pace, especially round the back of the defence, and although he’s only 21 he has a lot of experience already and has played in the Champions League.

“He didn’t have his best period at Standard, but I think now that he’s back in a country where they speak English, and he feels at ease, he can do the job.

“He needs a little bit of time to settle in, but I hope the fans can back him up and give him the confidence that he will need to be the player that he can be.”

Watt could made his Championship debut on Saturday when host Brighton and one Charlton fan took to Twitter to point out how straight forward that should be for the man who netted a famous Champions League goal for Celtic.

Meanwhile, other Addicks fans have taken to Twitter in their droves to hail the signing. The message was clear – Charlton need goals and the supporters are hoping Watt can be the man to deliver them.
