Ross County defender Scott Boyd went down in the history books in Tuesday’s 2-0 League Cup victory against Ayr United by breaking the Staggies’ club record appearance tally.
The match was Boyd’s 288th outing for the Dingwall side, meaning he surpassed Mark McCulloch’s previously held record.
Boyd’s milestone is all the more impressive considering County were in the Second Division when he joined from Partick Thistle in September 2007.
The centre half helped the Staggies achieved promotion that season before following that up by reaching the top-flight for the first time in 2012 – a status the Highlanders have yet to relinquish.
Boyd has been through it all and the Whitburn-born central defender was quick to highlight the personal significance of Ayr manager Ian McCall being in the opposition dugout on the night of his record-breaking appearance.
Boyd said: “It was funny that it was the manager who released me at Partick Thistle I was playing against to reach the milestone. I don’t know if that was meant to be.
“It’s a great achievement, though. It’s great to reach that milestone ahead of Mark McCulloch, who was my old team-mate. He was such a great pro and I’m delighted to overtake him.
“I’ve come here and what a journey we’ve been on since I’ve been here, since the days in the Second Division.
“We were playing against the likes of Ayr every week and now we’re an established Premiership side looking to kick on this season.
“I don’t think I could imagine being here that long and no one could imagine where this club is now, apart from maybe the people that have been on that journey. Over such a short period of time, we went from being a Second Division side to a Premiership side.
“It’s been amazing and a great time to play at Ross County. I’ve been fortunate to play with a lot of great players.”
Having made the club record his own, Boyd is determined to rack up many more appearances for the Staggies to further etch his name into County folklore.
The 29-year-old will be eligible for a testimonial if he reaches the end of the two-year contract handed to him by manager Jim McIntyre in the summer but Boyd says he is taking nothing for granted.
Boyd added: “I’ve always been one of the fittest and that’s what I’ve prided myself on. Hopefully, there’s still a long time ahead, so I can put a real marker down on this record.
“I’m delighted to be part of it and I want to be part of the future, too. I’m only 29 and still have a few years left.”
