Ten-man Ross County squandered a two-goal lead but held on for a point in an action-packed 3-3 draw with Dundee.

Liam Boyce fired County in front after 19 minutes only for Greg Stewart to restore parity a minute later.

A James McPake own goal and a Michael Gardyne header gave the Staggies a two-goal lead at the break.

But Dundee pulled a goal back from the penalty spot when Rory Loy converted from 12 yards after County captain Andrew Davies was sent off for a second bookable offence after 54 minutes.

The Dens Park men levelled the scores after 69 minutes when Loy grabbed his second of the afternoon to set up a nervy finale but County held on for a share of the spoils.

Staggies skipper Davies returned after missing the midweek 7-0 victory against Falkirk, while Michael Gardyne, Marcus Fraser and Martin Woods also returned to the starting line-up.

Dundee also made four changes to the team thumped 6-0 by Celtic last Sunday with starts for Julen Etxabeguren, Riccardo Calder, Rory Loy and Kevin Holt, while Thomas Konrad, Gary Irvine, Nicky Low and Gary Harkins all making way.

The Dens Park side had not beaten the Staggies in their previous 10 matches, while County were looking to extend a six-match unbeaten run.

Dundee wore a special strip incorporating the Black Watch tartan and battalion badge to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Loos. The city’s 4th Black Watch battalion suffered huge losses at Loos and the game kicked off following a minute’s silence.

Ross County had an appeal for a penalty inside the opening minute when Jackson Irvine was bundled to the ground under pressure from Etxabeguren but referee Craig Thomson waved play on, much to the Australian midfielder’s astonishment.

The visitors broke the lead with a stunning counter-attack after 19 minutes. Irvine ran more than half the length of the pitch before finding the in-form Boyce who evaded the challenge of Paul McGinn before firing beyond Scott Bain.

But there was an immediate response from the hosts who levelled a minute later when Stewart was afforded too much room on the edge of the area to drill the ball past Scott Fox from 18 yards.

Dundee captain Kevin Thomson was fortunate to escape a red card after 31 minutes for a foul on Marcus Fraser on the edge of the area, only seconds after being booked for a late challenge on Irvine.

County were given a helping hand as they regained the initiative when the hapless McPake, under pressure from Brian Graham, headed a Marcus Fraser cross into his own net.

It got even better two minutes before the break when the excellent Irvine crossed for Gardyne, whose looping header flew over Bain and into the net to delight the noisy travelling support.

But Dundee were handed a lifeline nine minutes into the second half when County captain Andrew Davies was sent off for a second bookable offence for pushing in the box and Rory Loy slotted home from the penalty spot.

An unmarked Calder should have equalised for Dundee when a Stewart corner fell to him only six yards out but he somehow blasted over.

But Ross County’s resilience eventually gave way in the 69th minute when Paul McGinn played in Loy who clinically fired the ball past Staggies goalkeeper Fox.

Dundee were claiming for another penalty when Stewart was brought down by County substitute Stewart Murdoch but referee Thomson waved away the protests.

Dundee left back Holt thought he had won it for the Dee with five minutes to go but his low drive was magnificently clawed away by Fox.
