Niall McGinn refuses to get carried away as Aberdeen close gap on Celtic

Aberdeen attacker Niall McGinn is not getting carried away by talk of a Premiership title challenge – despite his club cutting Celtic’s lead at the top of the table to one point following Saturday’s impressive 4-0 win away at Kilmarnock.

The Northern Ireland international headed the opening goal at Rugby Park before Adam Rooney, Jonny Hayes and Shay Logan all found the target in Derek McInnes’ 100th league game in charge. The comprehensive victory, coupled with Celtic’s 2-1 defeat at home to Motherwell, has reduced the gap at the top to a single point.

The Hoops have a game in hand and McGinn reckons it is too early to tell if his team can sustain a challenge at the top.

He said: “We have definitely turned the corner. We got through that bad stage and are back playing good football and keeping clean sheets.

“But we know we can’t get carried away. We will just concentrate on ourselves and take each game as it comes.

“We are in a good place at the moment and have to keep building on that. If we are up there come March, April and May then we will see where it takes us.

“Against Kilmarnock, I thought from the first minute to the last it was a very good performance.

“We probably could have scored five or six but to score four goals and keep a clean sheet was a great day at the office.”

McGinn set up Rooney for his 50th Aberdeen goal with an exquisite cross with the outside of his right foot and was delighted to also get on the scoresheet to leave him only one goal away from matching Rooney’s 50-goal return.

He said: “Things are going well for me and fair play to Adam for getting his 50th goal.

“Over the last number of weeks I have wanted to add more goals. I have chipped in with a lot of assists, but I want to score a few goals as well and thankfully I have managed to do that.

“I will keep working hard to make that continue.”

The Dons were without defenders Mark Reynolds and Andrew Considine through injury and illness but still went on to record their biggest win of the season.

McGinn added: “The manager mentioned the strength of the squad after the match and how well the players did who came on.

“I thought Cammy Smith was excellent when he came on. It is good to see players like him making an impact.

“We had a great start to the season and then we hit that blip, but we feel we are playing well now, scoring goals and playing with confidence. We have got two home games coming up and we want to get six points from them.”
