Sunderland are reportedly considering a move to poach Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.
The Daily Mail today suggest that the Hoops chief is near the top of the Black Cats’ shortlist to replace Margaret Byrne who resigned as chief executive last month.
The Black Cats have endured a difficult season and face a touch challenge to avoid relegation on the pitch, while trying to replace Byrne in the boardroom after she quit over the handling of the Adam Johnson case.
The 56-year-old has been in charge at Celtic since 2003 and has been credited with reducing the club’s debt and and improving the finances of the Parkhead club.
Lawwell was linked with a switch to Arsenal in 2008 but the boyhood Celtic fan stressed his loyalty to the club.
The Hoops chief is a member of both the SFA Board and the European Club Association’s Executive Board, however, he has drawn criticism from the club’s fans for both the club’s spending policy and the appointment of manager Ronny Deila.
