Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is unhappy his character is being questioned as the speculation about his future at Pittodrie continues.
McInnes continues to be heavily linked with a move to Rangers and reports yesterday claim an approach from the Gers will be made this week for permission to speak to the Dons boss.
The speculation continues after the Dons suffered their second defeat in four days by Rangers at Pittodrie yesterday as goals from Danny Wilson and Josh Windass gave the 10-man Gers a 2-1 win, with Frank Ross responding for the home side.
Rangers’ former Aberdeen captain Ryan Jack was sent off in his return to Pittodrie but the focus was on the Dons manager’s position rather than the result and McInnes is clearly growing weary of the continual questioning about his future.
He said: “This has been ongoing and there comes a point where enough is enough. I’m not happy with how things are being dragged out. Former players seem to know a lot more and every day someone has given an opinion about Rangers and my future. It has not been straightforward about my future because of that.
“My job is to try to get a winning team on the pitch; not to try to fend off questions. It is wrong for me to make a comment on speculation or an assumption.
“I’m manager of Aberdeen and my job is to get a winning team on the pitch for Aberdeen.”
After yesterday’s defeat by Rangers, the Dons have slipped to third place on goal difference behind their rivals and McInnes is looking for a response.
Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis insists the speculation surrounding the manager has not had a detrimental effect on the players. He said: “We are not in control of whatever happens. The manager has been totally focused on us and we haven’t changed anything we’ve done at all.
“Form drops for a variety of reasons. The press like to pin it on one thing but we need to improve for a variety of reasons.
“It would be a blow if the manager left but we can’t get involved in what might happen. Hopefully, Rangers can appoint a manager this week and we can all move on.”
