Adam Rooney has no fears for Dons in League Cup

Adam Rooney says he has no preference who Aberdeen draw in the final four of the League Cup.

The Irishman netted the decisive goal in the Dons’ 1-0 win against Hamilton Accies that earned the cup holders a place in the semi-finals along with Celtic, Rangers and Dundee United.

The Dubliner, who has netted 12 times in 17 appearances this season, feels confident the Reds can reach the final whoever they come up against in Saturday’s draw.

He said: “I don’t care who we get. We just wanted to get in the hat and now we can look forward to the draw.

“We have said over the last couple of seasons we are capable of beating anyone. It is never easier or harder to win a cup.

“Everyone is in it to win it and on any given day it can come down to the performance.

“We put on some big performances last season that managed to get us through and it will be the same this year.

“It doesn’t matter who is in the competition we just have to make sure we are up to our best and that can get us there.”

Rooney netted the winning spot kick in last season’s League Cup final against Caley Thistle after 120 minutes of football failed to produce a goal.

The 26-year-old admitted he has not watched the whole match back but is desperate to taste another cup final.

He said: “It was a bad final. I just fast-forward it through to the penalties.

“We were very proud of our achievements last year and we will fight as hard as we can to retain the trophy.”

Rooney was on the bench for last Friday’s 1-0 win against Motherwell but was pleased to take full advantage of a starting place for the Dons by scoring against the Accies. Only two of the Irishman’s 12 goals have been on league duty and Rooney admits he is becoming Aberdeen’s cup specialist.

He added: “Tony Docherty (the Aberdeen assistant manager) said to me before the game that my record was 11 goals in 10 cup games before the match.

“I think that is all the cup games, including the Europa League.

“I seem to love the cup games, so I hope they keep coming thick and fast. I feel close to my best form and I hope to keep it going.”
