McLean chasing one more goal with the Dons

Aberdeen are chasing a record points tally in the final two games of the season but midfielder Kenny McLean has a personal target in mind as the Dons prepare to face Hearts at Pittodrie tonight.

The former St Mirren player is one goal away from reaching double figures with the Dons in what has been a memorable campaign for the 24 year-old.

McLean made his debut in Europe and on the international stage and has been an ever-present in the Scottish Premiership for manager Derek McInnes.

With Simon Church struggling to face Hearts tonight and Adam Rooney ruled out for the final two games of the campaign McLean is ready to play as centre forward, as he did in the second half at Celtic on Sunday, and that suits him just fine.

He said: “I feel I’ve had a decent season and with two games to go my aim is to get into double figures.

“I’m on nine goals at the moment but for a midfielder or striker 10 should be the figure to aim for especially at a big club like this where chances are created in every game.

“I should probably be on a higher tally than I am but I’m pleased with my season.

“I’ve played up front before and if I’m asked to do so again I will do it to the best of my ability.

“I don’t mind it at all. When I play up front the manager still gives me the freedom to go and get on the ball but clearly as a number nine there is more responsibility to get in the box and get goals.

“I enjoy playing up there as being in the final third is where I want to be anyway.”

The Dons also have a goal of their own to aim for as they try to beat last season’s 75 point tally for the campaign, a record for a non-Old Firm club.

McLean believes setting a new target will ensure there is no downing tools from his club against the Jambos tonight or on Sunday when Ross County also visit Pittodrie.

He said: “We want to win the last two games and beat the points tally of last season as we want to keep progressing.

“We’ve had disappointing results against Hearts this season and we want to put that right. There is no end of season feeling in training here as we prepare for the last two games.

“I’ve been reading up on games recently in the league and a few people have said there is an end of season feel now but we don’t want to be drawn into that.

“We’ve got a good home record and we want to make this place a fortress and try to win as many games as we can.”
