Caley Thistle v St Mirren: Ruthless better than toothless for Hughes

Caley Thistle manager John Hughes has urged his players to make the most of their second chance in the Scottish Cup.

Inverness had to dig deep to earn a replay against St Mirren on Saturday as Josh Meekings cancelled out Marc McAusland’s early goal for the Buddies.

With the two sides set to meet again tonight at Caledonian Stadium Hughes wants to see a ruthless streak from his men as they try to complete the task and secure a fifth-round trip to Partick Thistle.

He said: “I thought we did enough on Saturday to win the tie and Dean Brill hasn’t had a save to make.

“We gave them a goal, though. It was a poor one to lose. We dominated the first half and the second. We just were not slick enough.

“There were plenty of chances bouncing about the box but we need to be a bit more ruthless. Someone needs to gamble and try and get on the end of that. The most important thing is we are still in the cup. We will get another bite at it.”

The Premiership’s joint league leaders, who are unbeaten at home this season, will be favourites to progress against the Buddies.

Having helped guide the team to the final of the League Cup in March, Hughes would love to repeat the feat in the Scottish Cup.

He added: “The league position shows we hold no fear of anyone.

“I’d like to think the cup run last year would give us inspiration. We all want to be walking out at Hampden in May for a cup final.

“But right now it’s a long way off. We’re playing well and enjoying our football and we want to keep the momentum going.”

Hughes will look to in-form forward Billy Mckay, who has scored three goals in his last three games, to lead the way for the Highlanders.

He said: “Confidence has never been a problem for Billy. What you do in training, is nine times out of 10 what you’ll do on the pitch.

“Billy scores goals for fun in training and that’s why we always know he’ll score and it’s great to see him back among the goals again.”

Greg Tansey and Marley Watkins return to the Inverness squad for the game after missing Saturday’s match at Paisley due to suspension.
