Inverness athlete Daniel McFarlane was one of the top performers in the Scottish universities and colleges track and field championships at Grangemouth.

The Ross County club member picked up two golds, one silver and one bronze medal during a competition which yielded three personal best performances.

He won the discus with 35.66 metres, took third spot in the shot in 11.65 and finished fourth in the long jump with 6.16m, all lifetime best distances.

He also clocked 15.69sec for second position in the 110m hurdles behind Edinburgh’s Howard Bell who won in a championship record of 15.20.

McFarlane had hoped to bid for more honours by competing in the pole vault but a lack of suitable equipment resulted in the competition being cancelled.

He ended his day on another successful note however by helping Glasgow win the 4x100m relay in 46.14 while the Aberdeen University quartet of Daniel Rees, Jacob Scott, Bruce Donald and Christian Volodiev were second in 46.44. Rees also retained the 400m hurdles title in 55.20 and finished fourth in the 200m in 23.54.

Robert Gordon University’s Marcus Archer won the 200m in 22.70 after clocking 11.36 to take 100m bronze, both best times. His clubmate David Irvine struck silver in the 100m in 11.32 with Prise Olatoke (Glasgow) winning in 11.02. Aberdeen’s Rory Muir sprinted to victory in the 800m, clocking 1:56.76.Aberdeen’s Eoghan MacNamara cut a little over 33sec off his previous best time to win the 3,000m steeplchase in 9:43.97 while Marcus Morton (RGU) was second in the high jump in 1.94.

Aberdeen’s Finlay Mac-Leay was second in the javelin with a throw of 49.30 while Adam Hobson (RGU) finished third with 49.07, Glasgow’s Adam Boyle winning with 57.40.

There were bronzes for Ross County’s Hamish Hickey (Highland and Islands) who recorded 16:04.78 in the 5,000m and for Kieran Fraser (NE Scotland College) who clocked 51.10 in the 400m.

Aberdeen’s Ireland international Roisin Harrison won the women’s 200m in 24.79 with RGU’s Rebecca Matheson taking silver when equalling her personal best time of 25.06.

Matheson had earlier won the 100m in 12.23 with Aberdeen’s Sharon Jakisa third in 12.59. RGU’s Dionne Milne retained the discus title with a throw of 39.83 while her clubmate Hannah Cameron lifted the 800m crown in 2:13.13.

Paula Gass (Strathclyde) threw 40.28 to win the javelin with another Inverness athlete, Mary Flockhart (Highland and Islands) taking silver with 37.14.

Inverness Harriers member Gillian Gordon (Open University) was second in the 400m hurdles in 66.46.
