Police have issued a warning as Dons fans get set to pack out Pittodrie for the club’s Europa League qualifying game against Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

It comes in the wake of trouble in the run up to Aberdeen’s last European adventure in Bosnia, after local thugs attacked supporters with weapons and flares.

A number of fans were injured in the incident and The Press and Journal revealed last week how tensions nearly boiled over again just hours before kick-off after a group of youths threw a wheelie bin at supporters.

Ahead of tomorrow night’s crunch tie, officers have asked fans to be on their best behaviour to limit any chance of more trouble.

Match Commander Superintendent Richard Craig said: “We are expecting a high number of home fans to attend the game to support Aberdeen as well as several away supporters flying into the city.

“We have been working closely with both clubs to ensure supporters enjoy a great night of European football. I’m sure the vast majority of Dons fans will behave appropriately and ensure that visiting fans are given a warm welcome, however anyone who does not will be dealt with firmly.”

Superintendent Craig reminded fans that they should refrain from drinking alcohol in the street, the stadium, or when travelling to and from the game – and said those who do turn up drunk will be turned away from the stadium and arrested.

He added: “Officers will be closely monitoring fans entering the match and will be specifically looking out for anyone in possession of pyrotechnics. We will robustly enforce legislation in respect of pyrotechnics and alcohol before, during and after the match to minimise any disorder or antisocial behaviour.

“Our advice to supporters is come and enjoy what I’m sure will be an enjoyable game, and a great occasion for the city but do so responsibly.”

The game, which will kick off at 7.45pm, will be the first time the Cypriot team and Aberdeen have met in the tournament.

The Dons will be hoping to progress through to the next stage of the competition after overcoming Bosnian side NK Siroki Brijeg in the last round.
