Independence referendum: Scotland votes No

Voters in Scotland have said No to independence in a historic ballot on the future of the nation.

The result keeps the 300-year-old union with England, Wales and Northern Ireland intact.

After a two-year campaign, more than four million people went to the polling station yesterday to have their say.

And although Glasgow and Dundee delivered a resounding Yes, it was clear from early on that Better Together had won – especially after the Western Isles electorate delivered an unexpected early blow to the Yes camp.

The island, which is an SNP stronghold at Westminster and Holyrood, was a shock No – with 10,544 voters rejecting independence.

However, out of the 93,592 votes cast in Dundee, 53,620 of them were for Yes – offering First Minister Alex Salmond his first glimmer of hope.

Quickly followed by another Yes from Inverclyde, and chants of “Yes we can” the race was neck and neck – until another quick succession of Nos, all but dashing Mr Salmond’s hopes, despite the 194,779 Yes votes garnered from Glasgow.
