Poldark star: Playing flawed character with big ego brings me joy

Poldark actor Aidan Turner has revealed the enjoyment he gets from playing the BBC period drama’s titular character, whom he described as “flawed”.

Speaking ahead of the start of the programme’s fourth series Turner, 34, revealed that as an actor he relishes depicting the less flattering aspects of Captain Ross Poldark’s character.

When asked if he thought Poldark had a big ego, Turner replied: “Well, that’s the joy of playing a character like Ross for me, he’s a complex person.

“He’s not a person who always makes the right decisions at the right time and does the right thing.”

Poldark returns to BBC One on Sunday June 10.

“He’s flawed, and that’s why I find him interesting to play. I think he’s open all the time to learning, to change, although he can be stubborn.

“But I think his heart is in the right place, and I think in this series, we see him change and we see him grow and maybe lose some of that ego.

“I don’t think he’d be a very interesting character to play, or I don’t think he’d be very truthful, if he was just making the right decisions at the right time.”

Turner first appeared as the 18th century British army officer in 2015. He also starred in The Hobbit trilogy of films as dwarf Kili, one of Bilbo Baggins’ companions.

The Irish star has been linked with a return to the big screen as the next actor to play James Bond.

Aidan Turner has said he would

Turner said in an interview with magazine Irish Tatler Man the thought of being Daniel Craig’s successor was a “nice idea” but nothing more than that.

Craig has been confirmed for the next Bond film, his fifth, which will be released in 2019.

When asked again about the rumours, Turner did not completely rule out considering taking on the role as 007.

He said: “There’s somebody else playing the role, isn’t there? It’s come up quite a lot in recent times.

“I don’t know, when it’s free, I’ll have a look at it.”
