Sutherland youngster triumphs Thainstone Young Farmers cattle sale

Garioch Young Farmers Club member Finn Christie led the trade at the Young Farmers overwintered cattle show and sale at Thainstone, Inverurie.

Finn, who hails at Newton of Balquhain, Pitcaple, Inverurie, achieved the top price of £1,850 with a 548kg January-2019 born Limousin cross heifer.

Bred by EA Sim, Cairnview, Rorandle, Monymusk, she sold to Andrew Anderson for an undisclosed buyer.

Next best at £1,650 was a first-prize Limousin cross heifer from Keith Young Farmers Club member Mark Robertson, of Easter Fodderletter, Tomintoul.

This 388kg 11-month-old heifer was bred by Gordon Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharacle. She sold to Grant Dinnie, Bridgeton, Alford, on behalf of an undisclosed buyer.

Fellow Keith club member Jack Hendry, from Heads of Auchinderran, Keith, received £1,580 for his first-prize May-2019 Limousin cross heifer weighing 424kg.

Bred by WD Stephen and Co, Meikle Geddes, Nairn, she sold to Backmuir Livestock, Keith.

The overall champion prize went to first-time exhibitor and Ross Sutherland club member Duncan Munro, Invercharron, Ardgay, Sutherland.

Duncan, who won the same title at the Dingwall contest earlier in the week, sold his champion for £1,450 to Backmuir Livestock.

Scaling 478kg, the February-2019 born Limousin cross heifer was bought from Ian Stewart, Reisgill, Lybster.

She was awarded the top prize by judge Willie Purdon, Stravenhouse Farm, Carluke.

Also selling for £1,450 was the champion bullock from Lower Speyside club member Kyle Cruickshank, Clury, Dulnain Bridge, Grantown.

This was a 530kg March-2019 born Limousin cross bullock bred by Gordon Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharacle, which also sold to Backmuir Livestock.

The home-bred championship was also awarded to Duncan Munro, Invercharron, with a January-2019 born Limousin cross bullock, which was knocked down for £1,380 to Backmuir Livestock.

Weighing 540kg, he is by Powerhouse Lynx and stood second at the Royal Northern Spring Show.

Nairn JAC member, Ally Fraser, Easter Clune, Lethen, won the home-bred heifer section with a 354kg yearling Limousin cross heifer. She sold for £1,200 to Harry Brown, Auchmaliddie Mains, Maud, Peterhead.

In total, 30 heifers sold to average £1,181.54 or 264.6p per kg and 28 bullocks averaged £1195.77 or 241.3p.
