Clare’s Fairytale dream comes true

Clare’s Fairytale dream comes true

Each week, we ask small businesses some key questions. This time we speak to Clare Singer, owner of Fairytale Events in Aberdeen

How and why did you start in business?

Having two kids under the age of five, the option of working for myself offered me more flexibility than working for someone.

Also, I saw a gap in the market for venue decor; I had a basic knowledge of this industry, which was a big help.

How did you get to where you are today?

Hard work, hard work and more hard work. Never accepting no for an answer and never being satisfied, plus lots of late nights and a seven-day working week.

Who helped you?

I’m originally from Kent and – having no family in Aberdeen – my only support network is my husband, Steve. I would not have achieved what I have without him.

I also have a fantastic team who are so dedicated and positive about what we do.

In addition, I am a member of the Federation of Small Businesses; knowing they are in my corner and lobbying for small businesses gives great reassurance. Being a member is like having all the security and the tools that a big company has, all at the end of a phone line.

What has been your biggest mistake?

I don’t think I have made any big mistakes, but I have learned not to put to much trust into people as not everyone is out there to help you.

What was your greatest achievement?

Starting up with only £500 and a good idea despite having no previous experience in running a business.

Within five years, we’ve turned Fairytale Events into a thriving business, with a six-figure turnover and a staff of 25.

If you were in power in government, what would you change?

I would change the tax regime for small businesses and simplify the VAT process.

What do you still hope to achieve?

Lots. I have only been in business for five years and I have lots of ideas to diversify and grow the firm. As I said, I’m never satisfied as I feel there is always something more to achieve.

What do you do to relax?

I love spending time with Steve and our children, Rebecca and Thomas. I have also started to learn Spanish.

What are you currently reading, listening to or glued to on the TV?

I am very much into The Island with Bear Grylls. It’s interesting to see how people cope when put into extreme situations. I also love Britain’s Got Talent and Gogglebox – I love a laugh.

What do you waste your money on?

Clothing and, of course, shoes – I have nearly 50 pairs but don’t tell my husband.

How would your friends describe you?

Caring, determined and a good laugh.

What would your enemies say about you?

I hope I don’t have any.

What do you drive and dream of driving?

I drive the Fairytale van and dream of driving a bigger van.
