Everyone is invited to get “snap happy” and enter the 2020 Victorian Market calendar competition.

Celebrating 150 years

To celebrate 150 years since  the town council began work on creating a covered market in the heart of Inverness, The Victorian Market are launching a photographic competition to find 12 images that capture the essence of the market, Inverness and its immediate surroundings.

These images will then be used to create a 2020 calendar, which will be exclusively available within the shops of The Victorian Market from late October 2019.

How to enter

It’s time to hunt out any old images you have of the market, search your smartphone for the perfect picture or get out there and get snap happy!

To enter the competition, you can send your image to vmcalendar@pressandjournal.co.uk

If you have an actual photograph, it may be possible to scan this and enter the competition that way. Original photographs should be delivered to The Victorian Market no later than September 13. These will be scanned and can then be collected on Friday September 27 from The Victorian Market.

The finalists will be displayed in The Victorian Market and in the Press and Journal in late September.

A judging panel will select 12 winning images to appear in the calendar, along with the names of the photographers. The overall winner’s image will be used as the cover photo and this person will win a £100 Victorian Market voucher.

The deadline for entries is September 20 – get your entry in now for your chance to win! The Victorian Market 2020 Calendar will be on sale in late October throughout the market.

The calendar

The 2020 Victorian Market Calendar will only cost £4.95 and £1 from every calendar sold will be donated to charity, with “Safe, Strong and Free Highland” and “Spokes For Folks” receiving an equal share.

The calendars will then be on sale from late October but there only will be a limited amount of 3000 available. To register your interest for a calendar, please email neil.mcgregor@ajl.co.uk with “Victorian Market Calendar” in the subject line. We will let you know when they arrive. The perfect gift for someone from the city?

150 years of history

The original indoor market in Inverness was between Union Street and Queensgate but it was destroyed by fire in 1889 and rebuilt two years later at a cost of £7158.

With entrances from Academy Street, Church Street, Union Street and Queensgate, the new market included a spacious central hall and a fish market. There were no permanent stands – each stallholder rented trestle tables from the town council at 6d per day.

Nairn fishwives and farmers’ wives sold fish, eggs, fowls, piglets and dairy produce. The market hall was also used for flower shows, concerts and meetings. The tables could be pushed to the side to make room for the spectators.

Today the market houses a varied selection of shops.

The new Victorian Market website, launched in 2019, can be visited at thevictorianmarket.com.

Terms and Conditions

Closing date for entries is Friday September 20.

The competition is open to everyone. Employees of DC Thomson cannot win the £100 prize but can still enter their images for inclusion in the calendar.

Digital images need to be a minimum of 200 DPI.

Original images can be entered into the competition but inclusion will depend on ability to scan effectively. Whilst every effort will be taken to return these, this cannot be guaranteed. The Victorian Market and DC Thomson accept no responsibility should original images be lost or damaged.

By entering the competition, you are giving The Victorian Market and DC Thomson permission to publish your photograph in the 2020 calendar and for it to be kept on file for promotional use elsewhere by both. Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Images submitted must have been taken by the person credited by you. If you are not the photographer, you must have permission from the person who took the photograph to submit it to the competition.

The 12 winning images will be chosen by an independent panel of judges and their decision is final. In order to get a good mix of images, we will have the following; Under 12’s – 3 images, 12-18yrs – 3 images, amateur – 3 images and professional – 3 images

The cover image may or may not be one of the monthly images and again that decision is final.
