And the winner of the Name the Calf competition is…

L-R: Winner Riley, owner Craig Finnie and Baby Moo
L-R: Winner Riley, owner Craig Finnie and Baby Moo

The wee calf that garnered lots of attention at this year’s Taste of Grampian finally has a name – thanks to a toddler from Aberdeenshire.

Owner Craig Finnie took the animal to the annual food and drink celebration at Thainstone in Inverurie last month and asked members of the public to suggest a name for it.

A shortlist of 10 was subsequently chosen and put to P&J readers to vote for their favourite.

Over 300 people took part in the poll – with Baby Moo coming out on top.

The winning name was put forward by Riley Chapman, a two-year-old from Rothienorman.

His mother Nicolle, who took the youngster to the event, said it was their first time at Taste of Grampian and they “really enjoyed it”.

“It was really busy but there was lots to see, taste and do. We would definitely go back next year,” she added.

Mrs Chapman, who recently gave birth to another son, said it was the arrival of a sibling that led to Riley’s chosen name for the calf.

She said: “With the new baby coming along, Riley started to call everything ‘baby’ and because a cow says ‘moo’ he called it ‘Baby Moo”.

“When Riley said the name, the little calf went moo at the same time.

“We were very happy when we heard Riley’s name had been chosen as the winner.”

She said he was equally excited to discover he had won a prize – his very own cuddly wee calf.

The mother and son met Mr Finnie, who owns Finnie 4×4, to collect their prize – and got to see Baby Moo again.

Mr Finnie said: “I am delighted Nicolle managed to bring Riley up to Peterhead to claim his prize, given she was busy making him a little brother at the start of the week.

“I did suggest a contest to name the baby, but she said she had one lined up, so it was great to meet baby Lachlan too.

“I hope Riley enjoys having his own Baby Moo to share with his new brother.”
