The Gannochy Estate in Glen Esk dates back to the 12th century

One of Scotland’s finest private estates, previously a popular retreat for Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother, has opened its gates to the general public and is offering holiday makers the chance to let several of the estate’s beautiful properties.

Gannochy Estate in Glen Esk dates back to the 12th century when it was owned by the Stirling family.

Today Gannochy is a spectacular Scottish estate with a fantastic range of outdoor opportunities and a number of its residences, such as Little and Littlest Gannochy, are now available as the perfect rural retreats through holiday lettings company, Cottages & Castles.

Sue Bourne, manager of the firm, said: “The Gannochy properties offer holiday makers and those trendy staycationers the option to stay in the same property that has been graced over the years by the best of British.

“Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth as well as many other high ranking members of 1930s society favoured Gannochy as their Scottish retreat. It is fantastic that the estate is now offering its properties as luxury holiday lets and the general public have the opportunity to stay in such an iconic piece of Scottish countryside.

“The tourism this will create not only benefits the estate and supports its ongoing work but also the local economy and brings welcomed trade to the nearby villages such as Edzell.”
Little Gannochy, a delightful former factor’s office for the estate, now offers an unforgettable holiday let for those seeking the ideal location from which to explore Scotland’s stunning Angus Glens.

Previously the holiday home of Winston Churchill, this house is now available for the masses to enjoy and can accommodate parties of up to six people.

The estate was also frequently visited by the future Queen Elizabeth with her father King George VI during the late 1930s who enjoyed the estate’s beautiful riverside walks and peaceful woodland.

It was during this decade that the Gannochy grouse moors reached a peak when annual bags were in excess of 10,000 brace and the estate was renowned for its sporting opportunities.

If your party exceeds six people, the youngest and smallest in the Gannochy ‘family’ is a newly renovated cottage next to Little Gannochy.

This delightful cottage is aptly called Littlest Gannochy and provides bright and cheerful accommodation for another two guests. Guests can enjoy this luxurious property which has just recently had a stylish make over to create the perfect retreat for couples for a quiet evening or romantic break.

Sit out in the immaculate gardens and listen to the sound of the River North Esk or hide yourselves away in the cosy sitting room.

Nearby there is the Montrose Basin Nature Reserve or you can head for the hills and scale some of the 10 nearby Munros and catch some of Scotland’s iconic grouse or deer. Keen golfers can play on the wonderful Edzell course but can also choose from many picturesque and challenging courses including the world famous championship course at Carnoustie.

Nestled at the foot of the Angus Glens with the rugged Angus coast line less than half an hour’s drive there is plenty to be explored.

Little Gannochy is available to rent from £600 per week and sleeps up to six people. Littlest Gannochy is priced from £220 per week and sleeps two people.
